Two people were fatally struck by trains in separate incidents in the Alsace region of eastern France on Sunday morning, October 11, 2026. The incidents occurred near Wettolsheim and at Colmar railway station, causing significant disruption to rail services and leaving passengers facing lengthy delays.
The first incident occurred at around 8:20 a.m. near Eguisheim, close to the Ricoh factory in Wettolsheim. A man in his twenties was fatally struck by a TER regional train travelling between Strasbourg and Basel. Approximately 60 passengers were on board at the time.
Following the incident, rail traffic was temporarily suspended in both directions while emergency responders attended the scene. Firefighters left at around 9:30 a.m., but train services had not yet resumed. Delays of up to 40 minutes were reported as the disruption affected passengers travelling along the route.
A second fatal incident occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. at Colmar railway station, where a person was struck by a freight train. Witnesses reportedly said a man on platform B jumped onto the tracks as a train travelling from Sélestat towards Mulhouse arrived. The train was not scheduled to stop at Colmar.
Authorities halted rail traffic in both directions while investigators examined the scene. All platforms were evacuated, forcing dozens of passengers to wait inside the station concourse and outside the building as emergency and investigative operations continued.
The two incidents caused substantial disruption to railway services across the area. Following the second collision, services at Colmar were severely affected, with disruptions expected to continue until at least 1 p.m., according to the report.
The circumstances surrounding both deaths remain subject to investigation. The incidents brought major disruption to Sunday morning rail travel in the region, affecting passengers on regional services and those travelling through Colmar.
